Catawba wins in Clinton for first time since 1995-96 season

CLINTON, S.C. – Catawba College’s senior forward Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, N.C.) tallied a game-high 22 points and 15 boards to lead the Lady Indians to a 76-63 win over Presbyterian College in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Wednesday night at the Ross E. Templeton Center.

The win was the first for the Lady Indians in Clinton, S.C. since the 1995-96 season.

Presbyterian College recognized Senior Night versus the Lady Indians as the program honored guards Billie Haskins (Greensboro, Ga.) and Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, Ga.) who played in their final home regular season game. The senior duo will go down in history as one of the most prolific backcourts ever to play at PC. Both players scored their 1,000th career point this season and rank in the top 10 in several career statistical categories in program history.

In the first half, the Lady Indians shook off a slow start by both teams to took an early 11-3 lead at the 14:15 mark on a jumper by junior guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.). PC fought back and chipped away at the lead over the next several minutes and pulled to within five points at 23-18 at the 6:26 mark on a putback by Haskins. Catawba closed the half on a 22-11 run to lead 45-29 at intermission.

Cox and Locklear led the way for Catawba in the first half with 10 and 12 points apiece. The Blue Hose were led by a solid performance by sophomore center Cameron Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) who tallied a first half-best 13 points and added seven boards.

In the second half, Catawba pushed the lead to its largest margin of 19 points at 50-31 with 18:07 left in the game. The Lady Indians were able to hold the lead in double figures for rest of the half, the smallest margin being 12 points down the stretch at 50-38 on a layup by PC’s Cook.

Joining Locklear for scoring honors was Cox with 11 points and five assists while junior guard Isiaette Darden (Wilson, N.C.) came off the bench to score 12 points for Catawba.

PC was led by Cook’s 19 points and nine rebounds while Haskins added 14 points and five boards. Redshirt junior forward Lauren Yanik (Greer, S.C.) came off the bench to add 12 points for PC.

Catawba improves to 18-8 overall and 10-3 in league play while Presbyterian falls to 8-18 overall and 3-10 in league action.
