Elizabeth City State Runs Past Presbyterian 71-59

Columbus, GA - Elizabeth City State placed a trio of players in double figures in a balanced attack as they pulled away from Presbyterian in the second half for a 71-59 win in the Columbus State Tip-Off Classic here Saturday. The Lady Vikings run their season mark to 3-2, while Presbyterian falls to 1-2.

ECSU held a 29-26 advantage at the half as both team struggled shooting the basketball. The Lady Vikings shot just 33 percent, but hit 5-10 from three-point range, while the Blue Hose shot just 30 percent and hit three of seven three-point attempts.

The lead changed hands four times in the first three minutes of the second half, but ECSU took the lead for good on a Kristen Snead lay-up with 16:47 to play. That started a 9-0 run that gave the Lady Vikings a 40-32 lead with 14:45 left. Presbyterian answered by cutting the margin back to just three, 42-39, on a Billie Haskins trey with 12:28 left. That would prove to be as close as the Blue Hose could get.

A 10-0 effectively put the game away as a Snead free-throw put ECSU up 52-39 with 8:22 left. The Lady Vikings coasted in from there, leading by as many as 18 points on two occasions before taking the 12-point win.

Hope Riddick and Trevia Pittman led the way with 11 points each, while Shaneka Ellis chipped in 10 points. Four other players scored at least seven points for ECSU as they wore down the Blue Hose in the second half. The Lady Vikings out-rebounded PC 36-33 on the day.

Presbyterian got 17 points from Haskins to lead the way, giving her 48 points in the two games played in Columbus. Dana Birnie added 13 points and 10 rebounds in the game. PC improved to shoot 41 percent in the second half, but could not match the 53 percent effort of their opponents.
