HOSE ROLL PAST FLYING FLEET 97-66 IN SEASON OPENER DUE
WEST, S.C. —
Presbyterian College's senior guard Billie Haskins
(Greensboro, Ga.) scored 24 points and sophomore center Anna
Sheppard
(Norcross, Ga.) added a career-high 20 to lead the Blue Hose
to a 97-66 win over Erskine in non-conference women's
basketball action on Monday night in the Galloway Center. Sheppard
hit six-of-seven field goals including two-for-two from
three-point land and six-of-six from the charity stripe.
Haskins picked up where she left off last season by hitting
eight-of-12 shooting from the field including four-of-five
from three-point land and added four assists. Presbyterian
stormed its way to a 20-4 lead in the first seven minutes of
the game and had its largest lead of the first half at the
7:09 mark as a Haskins field goal gave the Blue Hose a 34-13
edge. Erskine mounted a rally for the remainder of the half,
and cut the lead to ten at 45-35 at the break. Two Melissa
Woods' three-pointers led the charge for the Fleet. The
Blue Hose quickly erased any hope of a comeback for the Flying
Fleet by opening the second half with a 8-0 run. Erskine cut
the lead to 66-48 at the 10:13 mark, but would get no closer.
The final margin was the largest lead of the night for the
Blue Hose. In
addition to Haskins and Sheppard, two other Blue Hose scored
in double figures as redshirt sophomore forward
Dana Birnie
(Suwanee, Ga.) added 11 and a game-high eight rebounds and
sophomore center Cameron
Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) had 10 points and three
boards. PC
shot 50.0% from the field including 60.0% from three-point
land (9-of-15). In addition, the Blue Hose dominated the
boards holding a 48-32 advantage including 16 offensive
rebounds. Erskine
was led by Woods
with 19 points and Lisa
Jackson with 12. The win moves PC to 1-0 on the season. Erskine falls to 1-1. The Flying Fleet will play at Newberry on Thursday. The Blue Hose return to action this weekend as they travel to Columbus, Ga. to participate in the Columbus State University Tournament. |
