L-R Women's Basketball Wins Fourth In A Row, 69-58 Over Presbyterian

HICKORY, N.C. — The Lenoir-Rhyne women's basketball team won its fourth consecutive game and remained in first in the South Atlantic Conference with a 69-58 win over Presbyterian Saturday night in Shuford Gymnasium.  L-R improved to 9-7 overall and 4-1 in the SAC while the Blue Hose fell to 6-11 and 2-3, respectively.

The Bears, who will face Wingate at home Wednesday in a first-place league showdown, defeated PC for only the fourth time in 31 tries all-time. Presbyterian travels to Salisbury, N.C. to take on Catawba for a 6 p.m. contest Wednesday.

The story of game was Lenoir-Rhyne's work on the glass as it out-rebounded PC, 45-23, and was led once again by junior Crystal Clary. The center from Hampton, Va., tallied her 12th double-double of the season (sixth in a row) with 18 points and 15 rebounds while junior guard Katrina Andrews (Tampa, Fla.) scored a career-high 18 points.  Junior Shea Blacknell (Chapel Hill, N.C.) put together an impressive all-around game for Lenoir-Rhyne, tallying six points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four blocked shots.

The Bears jumped out to an 18-point lead before intermission before Presbyterian rallied to cut the deficit to three and trailed at the half, 38-33.

However, the turning point of the contest came in the second half with the Bears up, 54-46, at the 12-minute mark.  From there, Lenoir-Rhyne went on a 10-0 run over the next six minutes to put the contest away.

PC, who shot just 39 percent from the field and 17 percent behind the three-point line, was led by Bonnie Werner's (Kennesaw, Ga.) 15 points. Cameron Cook (Greensboro, Ga.) and Dana Birnie (Suwanee, Ga.) also scored in double figures for Presbyterian with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Birnie grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double as well.
