Jacobs' last second shot beats Presbyterian, 71-69

GREENWOOD---- Lander University junior guard Tracy Jacobs’ (Shaker Heights, OH) jumper as time expired lifted the Lady Bearcats to a 71-69 win over Presbyterian College in women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Finis Horne Arena.

Lander led 69-67 with: 17 seconds remaining on a layup by junior guard Ashley Johnson (Knoxville, TN) before PC tied the game at 69-69 with :06 seconds remaining on a jumper in the lane by senior guard Billie Haskins (Greensboro, GA). Lander called a timeout to setup the winning play as Jacobs responded with a jumper in the lane as time expired.

The game was the home opener for the Bearcats who improve to 4-0 on the season while Presbyterian drops to 1-4 on the season.

The first half saw both teams take turn holding the lead as PC used its strength in the low post while Lander relied on their perimeter pressure. PC took the lead for good late in the half and took a 41-33 lead into intermission.

Redshirt junior forward Lauren Yanik (Greer, SC) led the Blue Hose with nine points and four rebounds while redshirt sophomore forward Dana Birnie (Suwanee, GA) added eight points. PC shot 66.7% from the field on 16-of-24 shooting while the Bearcats struggled to shoot 35.1% on 13-of-37 shooting. Lander was led in scoring by Jacobs who tallied a first half 11 points for the Bearcats.

PC opened the second half hitting a pair of three-pointers from junior guard Lauren Dobson (Greenville, SC) and Haskins to push the lead to 12 points at 47-35 with 17:52 remaining. Lander responded with a 15-3 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 50-50 with 13:13 remaining.

The lead changed hands three more times down the stretch, as neither team was able to open a comfortable advantage. Lander’s junior post Jacquay White (Lawrenceville, GA) evened the game at 67-67 on a free throw with 1:52 remaining to complete the Bearcat comeback.

Lander was led by Jacobs’ game-high 28 points to go along with 10 rebounds while junior guard Natasha Hemphill (Gaffney, SC) added 10 points. Presbyterian was led in scoring by Yanik and Haskins who each tallied 15 points with Yanik adding seven rebounds. Birnie chipped in 13 points and team-high nine rebounds for the Blue Hose.
