TUSCULUM SECURES KEY LEAGUE ROAD WIN WITH 67-56
 VICTORY OVER BLUE HOSE
TC’s Maples leads three players in double figures in Lady Pioneer victory

CLINTON, S.C. – Tusculum College’s junior guard Julie Maples (Knoxville, Tenn.) led three Lady Pioneers in double figures with a game-high 19 points en route to a 67-56 win over host Presbyterian College in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Ross E. Templeton Center.

In the first half, PC took an early 12-6 lead highlighted by seven points from sophomore forward Rebecca Wessinger (Laurens, S.C.). The Lady Pioneers fought back on an 8-2 run over the next three minutes to tie the game at 14-14 with 11:23 remaining on a free throw by freshman guard Beth Bryant (Greeneville, Tenn.). The game was knotted up two more times until Tusculum took the game for good at 22-21 with 6:09 remaining on a jumper by sophomore forward Amber Redding (Sevierville, Tenn.). Tusculum would then go on an 9-1 run to end the half and take a 31-22 lead at intermission.

Tusculum shot 54.2% from the field in the first half and were led by Maples’ eight points. The Blue Hose struggled from the field, shooting 34.6% and were led by Wessinger’s 10 points.

In the second half, Tusculum pushed the lead to double figures at 46-36 with 11:20 remaining on a three-pointer by freshman guard Brooke Underwood (Knoxville, Tenn.). PC would fight back and cut the lead to single digits, the closest at 57-51 on a layup by redshirt junior Lauren Yanik (Greer, S.C.) with 2:53 remaining. The Lady Pioneers would hold off the Blue Hose on a 10-5 run the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Maples added an season-high eight rebounds for the Lady Pioneers who controlled the boards with an 40-25 advantage. Sophomore forward Kelli Karns (Pilot Mountain, NC) added 13 points and five boards while Redding chipped in 11 points and eight boards for Tusculum.

PC was led by sophomore forward Cameron Cook (Greensboro, NC) who tallied a team-high 14 points while Wessinger added 13 points. Rounding out the double figure scorers for PC was Birnie with 10 points.

Tusculum improves to 9-12 overall and 3-5 in the South Atlantic Conference. The win was the first for the Lady Pioneers in PC’s Templeton Arena. The Blue Hose fall to 8-13 overall and 3-5 in league play.
