Virginia Union Holds Off Presbyterian 84-75

COLUMBUS, GA -- Virginia Union placed all five starters in double figures here Friday evening and held off a determined Presbyterian squad 84-75 in the opening game of the CSU Tipoff Classic. It was the season opener for VUU, while Presbyterian drops to 1-1.

The Lady Panthers got 23 points and 13 rebounds from 6'5 post player Danielle Hoggard to lead the way. Pria Stellmacher followed with 22 points and 10 assists, while Shanell Roberts added 15 points. Andrea Bellamy and Shaaron Atkins had 11 points each, with Bellamy completing a double-double with 11 boards.

Presbyterian cut the Virginia Union lead to just three points, 76-73, with 3:45 to play on a Bonnie Werner trey. The Panthers answered with a 8-2 run to close the game and pull away for the nine-point win.

Billie Haskins posted a career high with 31 points for PC, going 7-15 from behind the arc. Werner added 11 points, while Dana Birnie led in rebounding with eight to go with her nine points. The Blue Hose were out-rebounded 54-37 and shot just 34 percent overall.

Presbyterian will face Elizabeth City State on Saturday at 2 PM, while Virginia Union will take on host Columbus State at 4 PM to close out the CSU Holiday Classic.
