WINGATE COMES
FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT BLUE HOSE 66-62 CLINTON, S.C. – Wingate University came from back from a double-figure halftime deficit to win 66-62 over Presbyterian College in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Wednesday night at the Ross E. Templeton Center. The Bulldogs rallied for the second straight road game to post the win over the Blue Hose tonight. Wingate trailed by 15 points tonight and by 19 points to Carson-Newman College on Saturday. In the first half, PC broke open a tied game at 19-19 by going on a 21-10 run in the final six and half minutes of the half. The run was highlighted by the Blue Hose hitting 17-of-22 free throws during the stretch. PC took a 44-29 lead into intermission led by nine points from senior guard Bonnie Werner (Kennesaw, Ga.) and redshirt junior forward Lauren Yanik (Greer, S.C.). The Bulldogs were led 12 first half points from sophomore center Veronica Taylor (Columbia. S.C.). In the second half, Wingate opened on a 18-5 run in the first eight minutes to cut the lead to 49-47 with 12:25 left on a layup by freshman center Emily Paffrath (Bakersville, NC). The Blue Hose fought back and pushed the lead out to five at 52-47 at the 12:06 mark on a three-pointer from freshman guard Brittany Carroll (Dunn, N.C.) on the ensuing possession. Wingate took control after that point, going on a 19-10 run to close the game and secure their second come-from-behind victory. The Bulldogs were led by Taylor who tallied a game-high 24 points and added nine rebounds while senior guard Samantha Dailey (Huntington, WV) added 15 points and three assists. Paffrath rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points and four rebounds. PC was led by sophomore center Cameron Cook (Greensboro, NC) who tallied a team-high 15 points and added four boards. Werner and Birnie each finished with nine points while Birnie pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Wingate improves to 16-7
overall and 8-1 in the league and remain in first place in the
regular season standings. Presbyterian falls to 8-14 overall and
3-6 in the SAC. |
