Saturday, January 29, 2005 BLUE HOSE FALL ON THE ROAD TO CATAWBASALISBURY, N.C. --
Catawba junior center Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, Va.)
scored a career-high 25 points as the Lady Indians defeated
visiting Presbyterian 74-65 in South Atlantic Conference
women’s basketball action at Goodman Gym on Saturday
afternoon. The win allows Catawba avoid its first
five-game losing streak in 20 years and ups the Lady Indians
to 11-9 overall and 2-5 in the SAC. The Blue Hose fall
to 5-14 and 3-4. Catawba played without its top
two leading scorers and Davis provided the big offense punch,
scoring 14 in the opening half. She improved on her
previous career-best of 20 points which she had set on
Wednesday in a double-overtime loss to league-leading Wingate.
Davis also added eight rebounds. Ingid Easter (Cana,
Va.) and Christina Carmon (Stafford, Va.) each
added 11 points and had nine and eight rebounds, respectively. The first half saw eight ties
and four lead changes and the Lady Indians used a 7-2 run to
close the half to take a 37-32 lead at the break. Carmon
had a three-point play and Danielle Scearce (Salisbury,
N.C.) had two layups to end the half for Catawba. Presbyterian fought back from
a nine-point deficit to tie the game at 46-46 on a layup by Rebecca
Wessinger (Laurens, S.C.) with 12:20 left. From
there, Catawba went on a 15-3 run to take a 12-point cushion,
the largest lead on the night. The Blue Hose would get
within 61-58 on a three-point play by Anna
Sheppard (Norcross, Ga.) at the 6:28 mark, but Carmon
hit consecutive jumpers for Catawba to give the Lady Indians a
65-59 edge with 5::17 remaining. Davis added two layups
and Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, Va.) two free throws as
Catawba took a 71-61 lead with 1:51 left. Wessinger scored
20 points to pace the Blue Hose, while Bridget
Takach (Chapin, S.C.) had a dozen points and five
steals off the bench. Cameron
Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) had 10 points with Brittany
Carroll (Dunn, N.C.) posting a double-double with 10
points and 10 rebounds. Catawba shot just 40% for the
game to 47% for the Blue Hose, but enjoyed a 47-32 edge on the
boards. The Lady Indians pulled down 24 offensive
rebounds and held a 27-14 edge in second-chance points.
Presbyterian had shot 58% in the opening half, but cooled down
to hit on 37% in the final 20 minutes. PC will be back in action Tuesday night as they host Converse College in a 7 p.m. contest. |
