CATAWBA HOLDS ON TO DEFEAT BLUE HOSE 70-65

CLINTON, SC ---  Catawba College had four players in double figures to withstood a late Presbyterian College rally to defeat the Blue Hose 70-65 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Ross E. Templeton Center. Today is the regular season finale for both schools and Senior Day for Blue Hose senior Lauren Dobson.

The first half was closely contested as the game saw three ties and four lead changes. The Lady Indians (17-10, 8-6 SAC) broke open a 21-21 tie with 7:46 remaining by closing the half on a 17-4 run to lead 35-25 at intermission. The run was capped by a three-pointer by senior guard Isiatte Darden (Wilson, NC) with :18 seconds remaining in the half.

Catawba shot 50.0% from the field in the first half and were led by senior forward Christina Carmon (Stafford, VA) nine points. The Blue Hose (7-20, 4-10) shot only 31.4% from the field, but were led by junior forward Rebecca Wessinger (Laurens, SC) who tallied eight first half points.

In the second half, the Blue Hose went on a 13-5 run to start the half and pulledwithin two with 16:36 remaining, but Catawba pushed the lead back out to nine before PC eventually tied it and took the lead with 2:10 remaining on two free throws by Wessinger.

Catawba’s Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) then hit two three pointers to push the lead back out to five with 30 seconds remaining.

Carmon led the Lady Indians with 20 points, while Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) had 13 and Cox and Darden both finished with 11.

Wessinger led the Blue Hose with 26 points, while Amy Jones (Warthen, GA) and Brittany Carroll (Dunn, NC) finished with 14 and 12, respectively.

Both teams will be back in action Wednesday night as they open up play in the 2005 Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
