FMU Dials Long Distance for 67-66 Win over PC

FLORENCE, SC — Senior guard Jennifer Howard (Raleigh, NC) came off the bench to score a career-high 26 points, thanks to a school-record eight three-pointers, to lead Francis Marion University to a 67-66 non-conference win over Presbyterian College, Tuesday evening (Nov. 23) in women’s basketball action.

As a team, Francis Marion also set Patriot single-game records for three-pointers made (14) and attempted (30).

FMU (1-2) collects its first victory of the season, while Presbyterian drops to 1-3.

Freshman guard Brittany Young (Moncks Corner, SC) added a career-high 17 points for Francis Marion, 15 of which came after intermission.

Forward Wesley Campbell (Greenville, SC) led the Blue Hose with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Cameron Cook (Greensboro, NC) chipped in 14 points, and guard Rebecca Wessinger (Laurens, SC) added 13 points and 14 rebounds.

PC led 30-27 at halftime as the Blue Hose held FMU to 30.3 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes.  With 17 first-half points, Howard was the only Patriot to register more than one basket.

FMU quickly tied the score at 32-32 early in the second stanza, but Presbyterian went back ahead 39-34 with 15:52 remaining. A jumper by Young and a trio of three-pointers fueled an 11-0 Francis Marion run that put the Patriots up 45-39.

The Patriot lead would stretch to 57-48 on a layup by 6-4 freshman center Shavone Mack with 7:34 left, but Presbyterian rallied to knot the score at 62-62 on a fast-break basket by Campbell with 3:03 remaining on the clock.

A three-pointer by Young gave FMU a 65-62 advantage, but Blue Hose junior Anna Sheppard trimmed the margin to 65-64 with a pair of free throws with 68 ticks left on the clock.

Following misses by both teams, Young drained two free throws with nine seconds remaining to give FMU a 67-64 lead. A three-pointer by Campbell was short with one second left, and Wessinger‚s follow shot at the horn left the Blue Hose one point short.
