Saturday, November 27, 2004 LADY BLUE HOSE FALLS 84-59 AT LANDER GREENWOOD – Jacquay White had a big first half and Jennifer Hukill took charge in the second half, leading Lander to its first victory of the season, 84-59, over Presbyterian Saturday night at the Lady Bearcat Classic at Horne Arena. White scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the first half while Hukill tallied 11 of her 13 points off the bench in the second half as Lander (1-4) ended a six-game losing streak dating back to last year. Thirteen players scored for the Lady Bearcats, who used a 19-2 run in the second half to put the game away. Natasha Hemphill led Lander with 10 rebounds, Lashaundra Dubose had six assists, and Ashley Johnson had five steals. Rebecca Wessinger led PC (1-5) with 14 points while Brittany Bonaparte had 10 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Blue Hose had 28 turnovers to only 12 for Lander. The Lady Bearcats led 36-19 at halftime, but Presbyterian slowly cut the gap and got as close as 42-31. Lander responded with its 19-2 run capped by an Amy Caver three-pointer, and Hukill’s three-point play and basket for a 61-33 lead. Hukill added three more baskets, her last making it 67-44, as the Lady Bearcats continued to pull away. Hemphill hit a three-pointer and Johnson got a steal and layup to stake Lander to an 11-3 lead just three minutes into the game. Wessinger scored to pull PC within 12-11 at the 12:11 mark. The Lady Bearcats responded with a 13-3 run behind White’s five points to take a 25-14 advantage with 8:19 left in the half. The Lady Bearcats closed the half with a 9-0 run capped by Hukill’s layup with six seconds left to take a 36-19 halftime lead. The Lady Blue Hose never recovered after shooting only 27 percent from the floor (7-for-26), 13 percent from behind the three-point arc (1-for-8), and committing 18 turnovers to Lander’s six in the first half. For the game, Lander shot 42 percent from the floor (33-for-78), 64 percent from the free throw line (14-for-22), and 31 percent from three-point range (4-for-13). The Lady Bearcats also had a 46-36 edge on the boards. The Lady Blue Hose finished the game 35 percent from the floor (16-for-46), 79 percent from the line (23-for-29), and 22 percent from three-point range (4-for-18). |
