BLUE HOSE HOLDS OFF MARS HILL FOR SAC WIN
Mars Hill, NC – The Lady Lion basketball team dropped their SAC opener 73-67 to Presbyterian College this afternoon in Stanford Arena. The game saw the lead see saw back and forth in the final minutes with Presbyterian holding on for the win. Presbyterian is now 3-10 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Mars Hill falls to 7-5 overall and is 0-1 in the conference.
The first half was a tight struggle that saw Presbyterian score the last 10 points of the half to lead 37-32. Brittany Carroll (Dunn, NC) scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead the Blue Hose. Rebecca Wessinger (Laurens, SC) and Wesley Campbell (Greenville, SC) added eight and seven points respectively. Abby DeBusk (New Tazewell, TN) and Kristi Ferris (Knoxville, TN) had eight points each to lead Mars Hill.
In the second half, Presbyterian led until Lindsey Jones’ (Crossville, TN) jumper gave the Lions a 57-56 lead with 6:28 left to play. The Lions last lead would come with 3:33 left to play on Crystal Davis’ (Crossville, TN) layup that made the score 63-61. Presbyterian would then go on a 12-to-4 run to make the final score 73-67.
Carroll led the Blue Hose with 22 points while Wessinger added 14. Campbell was also in double figures with 10 points. Cameron Cook (Greensboro, NC), Carroll, and Campbell each had seven rebounds. Jones led the Lions with 19 points while Ferris scored 14 off the bench. DeBusk chipped in ten points for Mars Hill. Jones was the top rebounder grabbing seven errant shots.
For the game, Presbyterian was 24-65 from the floor for 36%, 6-17 from the three point line for 35.3% and 19-22 from the charity stripe for 86.4%. Mars Hill was 21-63 from the filed for 34.4%, 4-18 from behind the three point arc for 22.2%, and 21-25 from the line for 84%. Presbyterian scored 24 of their points in the paint and also got 20 points off turnovers. The score was tied nine times and there were ten lead changes in the game.
The Lady Lions will return to action on Wednesday, January 12th in a SAC tilt at Tusculum College. Presbyterian will also be in action on Wednesday night as they host Wingate University at 6:00 p.m.
