BLUE
HOSE ESCAPE LADY LIONS 90-86 IN OVERTIME
CLINTON,
SC – Presbyterian
College’s junior forward Rebecca
Wessinger (Lauren, SC) hit a pair of free throws with
four tenths of second left in overtime to lead Presbyterian
College to a 90-86 overtime victory over the visiting Lady
Lions of Mars Hill College in South Atlantic Conference
women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon in the Ross E.
Templeton Center. In
the first half, the Blue Hose got off to a slow start as the
Lady Lions went out to an early 8-2 lead. Mars Hill was able
to hold the lead for the majority of the half until the Blue
Hose put together a 9-2 run in the final three minutes to pull
even at 32-32 entering halftime. Mars
Hill, who shot 36.7% from the field in the first half, was led
by junior forward Lindsay
Jones (Murphy, NC) who tallied 12 points. PC shot only
29.4% from the field, but capitalized on 10 points from
Wessinger who was four-of-eight from the field. In
the second half, PC’s sophomore guard Brittany
Carroll (Dunn, NC) hit a jumper to start a 9-3 run for
the Blue Hose as they pull ahead 41-35. PC was able to hold
the lead for the majority of the second half and even pushed
it to double figures at 55-45 on another jumper by Carroll at
the 8:43 mark. The Lady Lions responded down the stretch by
cutting the lead to a single point five times over the next
seven minutes before freshman forward Jessica
Blanford’s (Concord, NC) jumper at the 2:56 mark gave
Mars Hill back the lead at 71-70. The
lead changed hands two more times in the final minutes and the
game also saw three ties the last coming on a free throw from
PC’s Carroll to tie the game a 75-75 at the end of
regulation. In
overtime, PC outscored Mars Hill 15-11 in the extra period as
Wessinger scored six of her game-high 27 points to lift the
Blue Hose to the win. PC hit four consecutive free throws in
the final nine seconds, two coming from freshman guard Bridget
Takach (Chapin, SC) and the other two coming from
Wessinger. Joining
Wessinger for Blue Hose scoring honors was Carroll who tallied
18 points in the second half and overtime while junior forward
Wesley Campbell (Greenville,
SC) added 16 points off the bench. Mars
Hill was led by Jones’ team-high 23 points and seven boards
while senior center Crystal
Davis (Crossville, TN) chipped in 17 points. Sophomore
guard Laura Snider (Old
Fort, NC) scored 12 points and junior guard Kristi
Ferris (Knoxville, TN) rounded out the double figure
scorers with 11 points and seven boards. The
Blue Hose return to action on Wednesday, February 9 as they
travel to Wingate, NC to take on Wingate University at 6:00
pm. The Lady Lions also return to action on Wednesday night
when they host the Lady Pioneers of Tusculum College at 4:00
pm. |
