PC WINS FIRST GAME OF VANCO ERA 85-72 OVER QUEENS

BELMONT, N.C.--- The Presbyterian College women’s basketball team won the first game of the Jessica Vanco era Friday night, as the Blue Hose garnered an 85-72 win over Queens University of Charlotte in the Bojangles’ Queen City Classic, hosted by Belmont Abbey College at the Wheeler Center.

Presbyterian improves to 1-2 overall with the victory. Queens is 0-2 overall. Blue Hose head coach Vanco joined the South Atlantic Conference institution in the off-season after a successful stint as an assistant coach at Furman University.

The Blue Hose left little doubt they would pick up Vanco’s first win as the quintet never trailed. Queens came out of the gates cold and PC capitalized, taking a 13-3 lead on a three-point field goal by sophomore guard Brittany Carroll with 12:48 to go in the opening frame.

Presbyterian College shot an even 50 percent (15-of-30) in the first half, while Queens could manage only 31.7 percent (13-of-41). The Royals kept themselves in the game, cutting the margin to 27-25 on a three-point field goal by junior guard Carmelita Jimenez at the 6:04 mark.

The Royals would get no closer, as the Blue Hose pushed the lead to 45-32 on a tip-in by junior forward Anna Sheppard (Norcross, Ga.) with 1:24 to play in the first half. PC took this lead to the locker room at halftime. Queens cut the margin to eight early in the second half, but the Royals would get no closer the rest of the way.

PC junior forward Rebecca Wessinger led the Blue Hose with 19 points. For her efforts, Wessinger was named to the All-Classic team. Carroll contributed 13 points (including four three-pointers) off the bench, while junior center Cameron Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sheppard made five-of-six field goals en route to an 11-point performance.

Queens freshman guard Kasey Gillis led the Royals with 19 points and six assists. Sophomore center Jessica Sturgill had 12 points and six rebounds, while freshman forward Erinn Hayes notched 11 points and six boards. Queens junior forward Maggie Austin had 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Presbyterian College returns to the hardwood on Tuesday, visiting Francis Marion University for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
