PIONEERS BREAK OFFENSIVE
SLUMP
IN WIN OVER PC
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College women's
basketball team broke its recent offensive struggles by
scoring 73 points, 20 from senior Julie Maples
(Knoxville, Tenn.), as the Pioneers ended their five-game
losing streak with a 73-67 South Atlantic Conference win over
Presbyterian College Wednesday evening at Alpine Arena.
TC, which had lost nine straight conference games,
improves to 8-19 overall and 2-11 in the SAC. The Blue
Hose fall to 7-19, 4-9.
Tusculum jumped out to an 8-4 in the first five minutes on a
three by junior Amber Redding (Sevierville, Tenn.), but
PC answered with 12-2 run to go up by six (16-10).
Tusculum reeled off 12 straight points to take a 22-16
advantage and stayed ahead the rest of the half, leading 27-25
at the break.
Presbyterian scored the first four points of the second half
but an 8-2 run put Tusculum up and in control.
The Pioneers led by nine twice midway through the final period
but PC junior Rebecca Wessinger (Laurens, S.C.)
single-handedly brought the Blue Hose back, scoring nine
straight points, and freshman Bridget Takach (Chapin,
S.C.) hit a three-pointer to give PC a 50-48 lead with 7:37 to
play.
The two teams traded the lead back and forth for the next four
minutes, but after a free throw from PC sophomore Brittany
Carroll (Dunn, N.C.) cut Tusculum's lead to 59-58 with
3:36 left, a trey by Tusculum's Chassity Martin (Salem,
Va.) sparked a 7-0 rally to go up by eight, a lead they would
not relinquish.
Wessinger led all scorers with 21 points, 15 in the second
half. Junior Cameron Cook (Greensboro, N.C.)
added 14, and Carroll and junior Wesley Campbell
(Greenville, S.C.) poured in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Maples held game-high honors for Tusculum while Redding posted
her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10
rebounds. Sophomore A.J. Johnson (Winter Haven,
Fla.) contributed 11 for the Pioneers.
Both teams wrap up the regular season at home Saturday.
Tusculum hosts Lenoir-Rhyne and Presbyterian entertains
Catawba. The games will begin at 2 p.m.
