TOPS PRESBYTERIAN 74-57
IN SAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
WINGATE, N.C. --
The Wingate
University women's basketball team defeated Presbyterian
College 74-57 Wednesday afternoon in Cuddy Arena on the campus
of Wingate. With the win, Wingate is now 15-7 overall and 8-1
in the SAC. Presbyterian falls to 7-15 overall and 4-5
in the SAC.
Wingate had three players score double digits. Sophomore guard
Tanetra Barrett (Marshville, N.C.) led the Bulldogs
with 17 points. Sophomore center Emily Paffrath (Bakersville,
N.C.) added 13 points, while junior center Veronica Taylor (Columbia,
S.C.) added 12 points for Wingate.
Presbyterian junior forward Rebecca
Wessinger led the
way with a game-high of 23 points. Junior center Cameron
Cook recorded
12 points. Junior forward Wesley
Campbell added a game-high of 10
rebounds.
The contest saw one lead change in the second half before the
Bulldogs pulled away. A three-pointer by senior forward Ali
Greiner (Raleigh, N.C.) game Wingate its biggest lead of
20 points with 7:29 left to play.
A Wessinger lay-up with 0:33 remaining cut made the 71-56 to
cut Wingate's lead to 15 points. Junior guard Lauren
Whisnant (Morganton, N.C.) hit a three-pointer at the
buzzer to put Wingate up by 17 points to claim the victory.
Presbyterian only hit 28.1 percent of its second half field
goal tries (14-of-22). On the other end, the Bulldogs hit 43.8
percent of their field goals (8-of-15) in the second half. In
addition, the Bulldogs outrebounded the Blue Hose 44-41.
Wingate shot 46.0 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from
the three-point line for the game. Presbyterian managed only
33.3 percent from the field and 7.1 percent from three-point
land Wednesday afternoon.
Both teams will return to South
Atlantic Conference action Saturday, Feb. 12. Newberry College
will visit Wingate (2 p.m.), while Presbyterian returns home
to host Carson-Newman College (2 p.m.) the same day.
