PRESBYTERIAN HOLDS OFF
PATRIOTS FOR 69-61 VICTORY
CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian College placed three
players in double figures en route to a 69-61 victory over
Francis Marion University in women’s basketball action
Tuesday night at the Ross E. Templeton Center. The game was
the season opener for both schools.
The Lady
Blue Hose led by as many as 22 points in the second half,
but had to hold off a late Francis Marion run to secure the
victory. The Patriots cut a double figure lead in the final
minutes and trailed by only eight points (67-59) with :17
seconds remaining when sophomore guard Creshenda
Singletary (Johnsonville, S.C.) hit one of two free
throw attempts. PC’s sophomore guard Amy Jones
(Warthen, Ga.) hit a pair of free throws in the final
seconds to seal the eight-point victory.
PC (1-0)
was led on the night by senior forward
Rebecca Wessinger
(Laurens, S.C.) who tallied a game-high 17 points on
five-of-eight shooting from the field while Francis Marion
was paced by sophomore guard Brittany Young (Moncks
Corner, S.C.) who led three Patriots in double figures with
15 points.
The Lady
Blue Hose opened the game with a 6-0 spurt keyed by a
three-point play from senior center
Cameron Cook
(Greensboro, N.C.) on the opening possession. The lead
increased to double figures at 23-10 at the 6:07 mark of the
first half when sophomore guard Amy Jones (Warthen,
Ga.) connected the second of two free throw attempts.
FMU (0-1)
scored the next eight points to trim the lead to 23-18 on a
layup by freshman guard Kirby Marsh (Lynchburg, Va.)
with 4:20 remaining before halftime. PC closed the first
half on a 10-6 to lead 33-24 at intermission. PC’s Wessinger
led all scorers with 15 points while Cook added seven
points. FMU was led by senior guard Danielle Moore
(Owings Mill, MD) who tallied six points.
Joining
Young for Patriot scoring honors on the night was Singletary
who tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds
while Moore chipped in 14 points.
PC’s
Jones scored 15 points and added eight assists while Cook
chipped on 14 points and eight boards on the night. Senior
forward Wesley
Campbell (Greenville, S.C.) added six points and
tied for game honors with 10 rebounds.
