WINGATE TOP PRESBYTERIAN 77-56 IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE 2006 FOOD LION SAC WOMEN 'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior guard Tanetra Barrett (Marshville, N.C.), the 2005-06 South Atlantic Conference player of the year, tied a career-high with 29 points as the Bulldogs topped Presbyterian College 77-56 in the first round of the 2006 Food Lion SAC women's basketball tournament on Wednesday evening in Cuddy Arena.

Bulldog junior forward and second team All-SAC standout Emily Paffrath (Bakersville, N.C.) contributed 16 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots for  Wingate. With the victory, the top seeded Bulldogs improves to 23-5 overall and advances to the tourney semifinals. Wingate will face fifth-seeded Newberry College, who defeated Mars Hill 72-67, on Saturday afternoon (3 p.m.) in Hickory at the Catawba Valley Community College Arena. Presbyterian completes its season 21-7 overall.

Presbyterian senior guard and first team all-SAC honoree Rebecca Wessinger (Laurens, S.C.) led the Blue Hose with 15 points. Senior center Cameron Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) tallied 14 points and four rebounds for the visitors. PC freshman forward Morgan Johnson (Marietta, Ga.) chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.

For the Bulldogs, SAC freshman of the year Anna Atkinson (Marion, N.C.) totaled 11 points, four assists, three steals and four rebounds.

The top-seeded Bulldogs entered intermission with a 37-33 lead. The game was tied on four separate occasions and the visiting Blue Hose led by as many as eight in the first half. Cook led all scorers with 14 markers in the period. Paffrath led Wingate with 10 points before halftime.

Barrett scored 13 of her 21 second half points from the free throw line. For the game, Barrett was 17 for 18 from the line as Wingate shot 79.4 percent, making 27-of-34 attempts from the charity stripe.
