Wednesday, January 11, 2006 BULLDOGS TOP LADY BLUE HOSE 80-66Salisbury, N.C. — Wingate University junior guard Tanetra Barrett (Marshville, N.C.) netted a game-high 26 points to lead the Bulldogs to an 80-66 victory over Presbyterian College in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action in Cuddy Arena on the Wingate campus. Bulldog junior forward Emily Paffrath (Bakersville, N.C.) contributed 18 points and four blocked shots off the bench for the hosts. With the victory, Wingate improves to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. PC falls to 12-3 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. Presbyterian senior guard Rebecca Wessinger (Laurens, S.C.), who entered the game third in the SAC in scoring (15.7 ppg), led the Lady Blue Hose with 19 points. Freshman forward Sharie Hopkins Chesapeake, Va.) had 15 points and 13 rebounds while classmate Morgan Johnson (Marietta, Ga.) chipped in 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. For the Bulldogs, senior center Veronica Taylor (Columbia, S.C.) led the team with 13 rebounds and freshman guard Anna Atkinson (Marion, N.C.) totaled 11 points, three assists and two steals. The two teams entered the locker room after the first half in a 39-39 tie. The game was tied on five separate occasions in the first half. Barrett led all scorers with 14 markers in the period. Wessinger led the Blue Hose with 11 points before intermission. The Bulldogs jumped out to a seven-point lead early in the second half when Taylor tipped in a Bulldog miss with 18:11 remaining in the game. The Lady Blue Hose immediately responded by scoring 10 unanswered points and leading 49-46 with 14:09 remaining. Over the next seven minutes, Wingate outscored Presbyterian 22-6 including 11 points and two blocks by Paffrath to take a 13-point advantage. The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 76-61 with 3:09 to play when Atkinson and forward Shannon Proffit (Christchurch, New Zealand) hit consecutive three point baskets from the right side. Wingate was successful on six of eight three-point field goals in the contest. The Bulldogs will host Newberry College in league play on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Lady Blue Hose will host conference opponent Carson-Newman College on Saturday at 2 p.m. |
