Lady Blue Hose Win First League Game Of Season
SALISBURY, NC -- A depleted Presbyterian
squad placed all five starters in double figures and defeated
host Catawba 67-60 in South Atlantic Conference women’s
basketball action on Saturday night at Goodman Gym.
The Lady Blue Hose, who dressed only six
players, snapped a 16-game losing streak and won its first
league game of the season.
Presbyterian improves to 6-21 overall and
1-15 in the SAC and will travel to Lincoln Memorial for a
first-round tournament game on Monday, Feb. 26.
Catawba falls to 20-8 and 10-6 and will
host a quarterfinal tournament game on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
The Blue Hose used five three-pointers to
take an early 15-8 lead. PC would lead by as many as 11 in the
opening half as Catawba shot just 28% and trailed 29-24 at the
break.
Jessica Parris (Inman, SC) scored all 12 of
her points in the opening half to lead the Lady Blue Hose.
Catawba trailed 46-39 with 11 minutes left,
but got a free throw and consecutive three-pointers by Andrell
Baxter (Evergreen, AL) to tie the game at 46-46 with 9:31
remaining. The teams swapped the lead 10 times from there until
Bridget Takach (Chapin, SC) hit a pair of free throws with 25
seconds to go to give Presbyterian a 63-60 lead that they would
never relinquish.
Kerianne Blease (Saluda, SC) led
Presbyterian with 16 points, while Sharie Hopkins (Chesapeake,
VA) and Takach each posted double-doubles.
Hopkins had 10 points and 15 rebounds,
while Takach had 12 points and 10 boards to acquire the first
double-double of her career.
Taylor Price (Fort Bragg, NC) added 11
points for PC.
Catawba was led by Baxter and Corin Muldrow
(Jacksonville, NC), who each had 13 points. Catawba shot just
30.6% for the game and were out-rebounded by the Lady Blue Hose,
54-35.
