Presbyterian Makes It Two in a Row with 76-45 Win over Morris

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women’s basketball team finished play at the First Annual Newberry Classic hosted by Newberry College with a 76-45 victory over Morris College Saturday afternoon.

Four Blue Hose players registered double-digit scoring figures as Presbyterian improved to 2-1 overall, while the loss dropped Morris to 1-6.  Junior captain Amy Jones (Warthen, Ga.) led the way with 15 points, seven assists, and six steals.

The Blue Hose received 14 points off the bench from freshman Lea Smith (Marion, N.C.), as Smith was 5-of-11 from the field in 19 minutes of play.  Smith was just one rebound shy of a double-double as she corralled nine.

Amil Rodgers paced all players with a double-double on 16 points and 13 boards in the Hornets’ loss.

After an Evoney Shaw jumper at 18:09 to knot the game at 2-2, the Blue Hose went on a 24-5 run to lead 26-7 with 7:49 remaining in the first half.  Presbyterian shot an impressive 43.9% from the floor, holding the Hornets to just below 30%.

Jones posted 10 points in the first half to help the Blue Hose to a 41-22 halftime lead, while sophomore Morgan Johnson (Marietta, Ga.) contributed seven caroms.

Johnson went on to finish the night with 11 points and nine rebounds.  

In the second half, Presbyterian continued to build upon its lead, taking its greatest advantage at 66-29 with 8:50 left.

Sophomore Jessica Parris (Inman, S.C.) was the fourth Blue Hose in double-digits with career-highs of 10 points and three rebounds.

April Drakeford added 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the free throw line, while Shaw ended up with 10.

Presbyterian shot 41.4% as a team and outrebounded the Hornets, 56-41.  Defensively, the Blue Hose kept Morris to 25.4%.

The Blue Hose return to action on November 21 as PC travels to Florence, S.C. to take on Francis Marion University at 7:30 p.m. in non-conference action.
