Edwards' Hot Shooting Leads Wingate
To League Victory

WINGATE, N.C. – Behind six three-pointers from Kate
Edwards the 25th-ranked Wingate Bulldogs downed the
Lady Blue Hose 82-57 in South Atlantic Conference
women’s basketball action on Wednesday evening at
Cuddy Arena.

Wingate improves to 12-4 overall with the victory and
4-1 in SAC play, while PC falls to 5-12 and 0-6 in SAC
action.

PC was led in the loss by Sharie Hopkins (Chesapeake,
Va.), who ended her evening with 14 points in 17
minutes on the floor. Morgan Johnson (Marietta, Ga.)
just missed out on a double-double in the loss,
finishing with 12 points and eight boards.

Edwards commenced the contest hot from beyond the arc,
hitting four consecutive three-pointers in the first
three-plus minutes of the game to give Wingate an
early 12-3 lead.

The junior from Laurinburg, N.C. continued her hot
streak over the next few minutes, connecting on her
fifth trey of the game to start the contest 5-for-5
from three-point range. Edwards, who came into the
contest shooting at a 42% clip from beyond the
three-point line, finally failed to connect on her
first three-pointer of the game with 12:13 left in the
first half.

The Bulldogs were still ahead of the Lady Blue Hose by
the same amount at 25-16 when the first media timeout
of the day was taken with 7:46 left in the first half.

Led by three-time 2006-07 SAC women’s basketball
player of the week Tanetra Barett’s first six points
of the game in the final two minutes of the first half
Wingate went into halftime with their largest lead of
the game up to that juncture at 39-23.

Edwards and the Bulldogs started the second half the
same way that they started the game with Edwards
hitting a trey.

Shortly after that the Bulldogs began to pull away,
going on a 14-8 run to start the half. By the time
Presbyterian head coach Jessica Vanco was forced to
call a timeout at the 12:06 mark of the second stanza
PC found itself with a 22-point deficit to try and
overcome.

The Lady Blue would get no closer as the Bulldogs
claimed the 25-point victory.

PC next travels to Jefferson City, Tenn. to face off
against Carson-Newman at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20.
The Lady Blue Hose will then have a week off before
welcoming rival Newberry to the Templeton Center on
Saturday, Jan. 27.

Tip-off between the Lady Indians and PC is scheduled
for 2 p.m.
