           PC’s Cometto Nabs Second Straight Top 10 Finish

MONROE, N.C. – Presbyterian College women’s golfer Kristen Cometto (Lexington, S.C.) earned her second straight top 10 finish with a sixth place finish at the 2007 Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate at the par 72 Stonebridge Golf Club. Cometto fired a two-round score of 156 (80-76).

As a team, the Lady Blue Hose concluded the event in ninth place with a two-day total of 789 (395-394).

The Wingate University women’s golf team overcame an eleven-stroke deficit after the first day to win the tournament. The Bulldogs shot 307 on Tuesday, giving Wingate a 626 score for the two-day event.

Wingate set team records for low round (307) and low two-day score (626) en route to the Hargett Memorial title. No. 23 Tusculum College finished in second, eight shots back with a two-day total of 634. The Pioneers edged No. 22 Catawba College by one stroke.

Catawba finished third with a two-day total of 635.

Catawba senior Jaynelle Harmon (Cranberry, Pa.) earned medalist honors, carding a 144 (71-73) for the two-day event. Her Tuesday score of 73 was the day’s low round. Harmon ended day one trailing first round leader Carley Warrington (Bradwell, England) of Belmont Abbey by two strokes. The BAC freshman placed second with a two-day total of 145 (69-76).

Tusculum senior Shannon Palenkas (Maryville, Tenn.) claimed third place with a two-day total of 153 (78-75). Wingate placed two golfers in the top five to complete the all-tournament team. Bulldog junior Shannon Smith (Laurinburg, N.C.) and senior Beth Kirkham (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Smith recorded a two-day total of 154 (79-75), while teammate Kirkham was finished with a two-day total of 155 (81-74).

Wingate placed three golfers in the top 10. Bulldog sophomore Kacie Braxton (Graham, N.C.) carded a 158 (80-78), good for ninth place. Wingate senior Brittany Staton (Rockwell, N.C.) shot 160 (79-81), tying for 12th place. Bulldog freshman Lauren Seefeldt (Huntersville, N.C.) shot an 80 on day two to finish with a two-day total of 167.

PC will next travel to Greeneville, Tenn. to play in the Agnes McAmis Memorial at the Link Hills Country Club. The Tusculum College hosted event will run April 2-3.
