COLLEGE PICKED TIED FOR SECOND IN 2001
SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE WOMENS SOCCER TITLE RACE
Tusculum College Pioneers picked to defend their title
ROCK
HILL, SC
Tusculum College, last years regular season and conference
tournament champions, have been picked to repeat as South
Atlantic Conference champions, in a vote by the league coaches
it was announced today by the league office.
The
Pioneers were undefeated at 7-0 in the league last year and were
19-3 overall. They finished the season ranked 23rd in the
country. Head coach Mike Joy welcomes back 10 starters off that
squad, including Rachel Barron, last years SAC Freshman of
the Year and the conferences leading scorer with 33 goals,
tying the SAC record. She set a SAC record with 76 points.
Barron,
an All-Region selection last year, is one of eight Pioneers on
the preseason All-SAC team, which was also announced. Joining
her on the first team are Tara Henderson, Kelsa Eschmann, Amy
Miller and Robyn Galvin. Katie Wellman, Courtney Outen and
Jennie Murphy, an All-Region pick last year at goalkeeper, were
chosen to the second team.
Presbyterian
College and Catawba College tied for a second place predicted
finish. Both schools received one first-place vote. The Blue
Hose return leading scorer Jessi Adair, a first-team preseason
All-SAC selection. Presbyterian head coach Brian Purcell is the
winningest coach in SAC history.
The
Indians placed three on the All-SAC team, including Jen Lowe on
the first team. Amy Obermiller, the 1999 Food Lion SAC
Tournament MVP and Jamie Fisk were named to the second team.
Wingate
University was picked to finish fourth. The Bulldogs placed
eight on the preseason All-SAC team, including three on the
first team. Leading scorer Julie Law, All-SAC goalkeeper
Elizabeth Rogers and defender Michelle Bradbury were named to
the first team. Kelly Ann Hinchcliffe, who led the SAC in
assists as a true freshman, was named to the second team, one of
five Bulldogs on the second team.
Carson-Newman
College was picked to finish fifth, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne
College, Mars Hill College and Newberry College. Each school
placed one player on the All-SAC preseason team.
