PRESBYTERIAN DEFEATS GARDNER -WEBB 2-1 IN WOMEN’S SOCCER ACTION

CLINTON, SC – The Blue Hose of Presbyterian College defeated the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb University tonight’s non-conference women’s soccer match 2-1.  Presbyterian improves their record to 6-4-1 while Gardner-Webb drops to 7-4-1 on the season.

Gardner-Webb got on the scoreboard at the :45 mark when freshman midfielder Elizabeth Keir (Salem, VA) scored off and assist from teammate junior midfielder Kim O’Brien (Villa Hills, KY).  The Blue Hose would answer right back at the 2:10 mark with a goal by Jessi Adair (Decatur, GA) who received a great pass from senior midfielder Kim Counts (Charleston, SC) to tie the match at 1-1.  Junior forward Jeanne Blackburn (Lexington, SC) had a ball kick off the left post and past Bulldog freshman goalkeeper Sue Rettinger (Cincinnati, OH) at the 31:40 mark, assisted by Counts and Adair, to give Presbyterian a 2-1 lead.

The first half ended with the Blue Hose out shooting the Bulldogs seven to five.  Gardner-Webb had four corner kicks while Presbyterian only had two. 

Both teams had  opportunities in the second half, but neither team could put the ball in the net.  As the match was coming to a close, Gardner-Webb’s O’Brien had a great look from 12 yard out on the right side, but could not get the ball past Presbyterian’s senior goalkeeper Laura Johnson (Hilliard, OH).

Johnson finished the match with six saves while allowing only one goal in the first half.  Rettinger of Gardner-Webb also had six saves in goal and gave up both goals in the contest.

Presbyterian returns to action on October 17th on the road as they travel to Greenwood, SC to take on Lander University at 4:00 pm.  Gardner-Webb returns to action tomorrow as they travel to Orangeburg, SC to take on South Carolina State at 4:00 pm.
