PC Holds on for 3-1
victory over #7 North Florida JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Presbyterian College scored three goals within the first 32 minutes of play and held off the #7-ranked University of North Florida the rest of the way in a 3-1 victory at the UNF Soccer Field Sunday. With the win, Presbyterian (3-0-0) finished the UNF Classic 2-0, while UNF (2-1-1) ended the event with a 1-1 record. The win also snapped UNF's nation-leading 23-game unbeaten streak at home. Junior defender Robin Phillips (Columbia, SC) put Presbyterian on the board in the 16th minute of play, hooking a corner kick into the net for a 1-0 Lady Blue Hose advantage. Phillips would strike from the corner again, feeding Sophomore midfielder Megan Smith (Greenville, SC) for a header that found the back of the net and gave Presbyterian a 3-0 lead in the 32nd minute of play. With a 3-0 deficit showing on the scoreboard, UNF coach Mike Munch emptied his bench and watched his team contain the Lady Blue Hose, holding them off the scoreboard and scoring a goal of their own in the 80th minute. Freshman Lisa Taylor accounted for UNF's loan goal of the contest, as she put an Amber Cordell corner kick in the back of the net to cut the lady Osprey deficit to 3-1. Presbyterian kept UNF off the board the rest of the way however, as it beat the Lady Ospreys for the second consecutive year. Freshman forward Claire Joyce (Aiken, SC) added Presbyterian's second goal, scoring after she stole a ball in the UNF goal box. The Lady Ospreys outshot Presbyterian 17-11, but could only put one ball by senior goalkeeper Aimee Tatom (Irving, Tx), who finished the game with five saves. In earlier UNF Classic action, Lynn University defeated Belmont Abbey 2-1. The Blue Hose return to action this Tuesday, September 9 when they square off with rival Newberry College. The match is at Newberry starting at 5:00. |
