 Smith’s penalty kick leads Blue hose to 2-1 win over usc spartanburg

CLINTON, S.C.— Presbyterian College midfielder Megan Smith (Greenville, S.C.) connected on a penalty kick at the 74:18 mark to break a 1-1 tie as the Blue Hose prevailed 2-1 over USC Spartanburg in women’s soccer action Tuesday night at Martin Stadium.

The Blue Hose took an early 1-0 lead at the 19:30 mark as freshman forward Claire Joyce (Aiken, S.C.) scored her first goal of her collegiate career, unassisted as the Lady Rifles were unable to clear the ball out of the box.

The Lady Rifles evened the match at the 32:53 mark when junior forward Faiza Boujaafar (Rotterdam, Holland) scored on a break away splitting a pair of Blue Hose defenders off an assist from teammate sophomore midfielder Tara Clarini-Black (Montreal, Canada).

The match stayed tied entering intermission with the Blue Hose outshooting the Lady Rifles five to three in the first frame.

In the second half, the Blue Hose took control outshooting USC Spartanburg seven to three and had several scoring opportunities to score a goal until Smith was taken down in the box setting up the penalty kick.  

For the Blue Hose, senior goalkeeper Aimee Tatom (Irving, Tx.) allowed one goal and tallied four saves on the night, while the Lady Rifles starting keeper senior Lindsay Allen (Amherst, NH) allowed two goals while picking up five saves.

Presbyterian moves to 1-0-0 on the season, while USC Spartanburg falls to 0-1-0.
