PRESBYTERIAN REMAINS UNDEFEATED, WINS SAC OPENER AT NEWBERRY

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Presbyterian College sophomore forward Jennifer Merritt (Easley, S.C.) scored twice and freshman forward Ginny Wolfe (Lexington, S.C.) put home two goals of her own and added an assist as PC defeated Newberry College 6-0 to open up South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer play for the two squads Tuesday night at the Newberry College Soccer Complex.

Senior Ashley Cooke (Roswell, Ga.) added a goal and a pair of assists, while sophomore Megan Smith (Greenville, S.C.), the reigning SAC Player of the Week, had a pair of assists.

PC jumped out early with a Wolfe score at the 11:35 mark and never looked back. The Lady Blue Hose (4-0, 1-0 SAC) scored again in 17 minute intervals to go up 3-0 to start the second half. The Hose then put home three goals in the next nine minutes to grab their final margin of victory at the 59:08 mark.

Starting keeper Aimee Tatom (Irving, Tex.) was untested in the first half, as she did not face a single Newberry shot in that frame. Back-up keeper Rebecca Hood (Bishop, Ga.) garnered the only save of the day for PC as Newberry put up just three shots in the match, all in the second half.

The Lady Indians (1-3, 0-1 SAC) allowed 25 PC shots in the game. Keeper Annemarie Peterson (Lake Grove, N.Y.) had six saves in 80-plus minutes in goal.

PC hosts Anderson College Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Martin Stadium.

Newberry will travel to its first home game of the season, next Monday afternoon at Coker for a 5 p.m. start.
