Sunday,
September 5, 2004 #23 Lady Blue Hose
fall 3-1 to Clayton College and MORROW, GA --- For the third straight game, Clayton College &
State University freshman Olaitan Yusuf scored two goals
in a contest, and also for the third consecutive time this
season, the Lakers captured a victory. The Clayton State women's soccer team won its third in a row on Sunday,
knocking off 23rd-ranked Presbyterian College 3-1 at Laker
Field. The win is only the third time in school history that
women's soccer program has defeated a nationally ranked team.
Clayton State defeated two nationally ranked teams in Francis
Marion University and the University of North Florida in the
2002 season. In Sunday's contest, the Lakers struck early as Yusuf drilled a shot from
20 yards out in the upper left of the net three minutes into the
match. The play was setup on a long cross from senior Nkiru
Okosieme. Clayton State extended its lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute, as a 25-yard
shot by junior Florence Okpala found the lower left of
the goal past the outstretched arms of freshman Presbyterian
keeper Erin Sinkuler. The
play was setup on a pass from Yusuf. Neither team scored for almost 50 minutes of play until the Blue Hose cut
the deficit to 2-1 in the 78th minute with a goal from freshman Millie
Green off an assist by junior Jennifer
Merritt. Clayton State answered right back, however, as Yusuf scored
her second goal of the game and her sixth of the season off a
corner kick from freshman Jennifer Winslette. Presbyterian took 21 shots compared to only 11 for the Lakers and had 11 corner kicks to Clayton State's five. Laker keeper Judith Chime shined in goal with 10 saves, while Sinkuler had seven stops. |
