PC ADVANCES TO SEMI'S OF SAC TOURNAMENT IN SHOOTOUT

NEWBERRY , S.C.In the first round of the 2004 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon, the #5 Presbyterian Blue Hose defeated the host school #4 Newberry in an overtime thriller 1-1, with the Lady Blue Hose prevailing with a 5-3 advantage in penalty kicks.  Newberry drops to 13-5-1 , while Presbyterian lives to fight another day with a 8-6-1 overall record.

The opening goal of the match was notched by 1st team All-SAC midfielder Megan Smith ( Greenville , S.C. ) in the 14th minute.  Then the 1st team All-SAC midfielder from Newberry Adriana Farfan ( West Palm Beach , Fla. ) leveled the match at one on the 30th minute.

Regulation ended with both team knotted at one.  Two 10-minute sudden death format overtime periods were played with no team recording a game winning goal.  After the second overtime period, a penalty kick shootout was used to decide the winner.

In the third round of penalty kicks, a shot taken by Nicole Nilica ( St. Louis , Mo. ) was blocked by Blue Hose keeper Brittany Pecora ( Myrtle Beach , S.C. ).  All-SAC forward Claire Joyce ( Aiken , S.C. ) put the final kick for Presbyterian in the net, giving the Blue Hose the win with a 5-3 advantage in the shootout.

Newberry’s season is done, while Presbyterian will face #1 Tusculum on Friday in Clinton , S.C. in the second round of the Food Lion SAC Tournament.
