PURCELL ANNOUNCES BLUE HOSE WOMEN’S SOCCER SIGNING CLASS FOR 2005

CLINTON, S.C. — Christy Howard, Sheldon Robinson, Frankie Battye, Lytle Cannon, and Missy Tempel have signed to play women’s soccer at Presbyterian College announced today by head coach Brian Purcell.

Howard, a 5-3 midfielder/forward, is a native of Stone Mountain, Georgia where she plays for Parkview High School and former Blue Hose standout, head coach Mark Albertus. This past season, she helped lead her team to the quarterfinals of the 5-A state playoffs and was a member of the 2003 state 5-A championship squad. She is also a member of the Georgia Futbol Club coached by Pat Goolsby. Off the field, Howard is a member of the Beta Club.

” Christy gives us some much needed speed in the attack,” said Purcell. “She combines tremendous ability with an extremely high work rate.”

Robinson, a 5-8 midfielder/defender, is a native of Simpsonville, South Carolina where she attends Hillcrest High School. She is also a member of the CESA Under-18 club team and head coach Andrew Hyslop who won the 2004 state championship and is a member of the South Carolina Olympic Development state team. Off the field, she is a member of the Beta Club and has been selected to the National Honor Society.

“Sheldon will provide a dominant physical presence with athleticism and strength,” said Purcell. “She has the potential to greatly impact a game.”  

Battye, a 5-6 midfielder, is a native of Charleston, South Carolina where she plays for James Island High School and head coach Stella Chisolm. She was named to the all-region and all-area teams in 2004 and has 41 career goals entering her senior year. Battye is a member of the CGSA Fusion Under-18 club team that finished as state runner-ups in 2004 and is a member of the South Carolina Olympic Development Program’s state team. Off the field, she is a member of the Beta Club.

“Battye is a skillful, smart player who can play a number of positions,” said Purcell. “Her versatility gives us several options for how best to utilize her strengths.”

Cannon, a 5-8 forward, is a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina where she plays for Spartanburg High School and head coach Paul McGinty. She earned all-region and all-area honors in 2004 and was selected as member of the South Carolina Super 18. Cannon plays for the CESA Under-17 Club team and head coach David Minahan who won the 2004 state championship. Off the field, she has been selected as representative to the National Youth Leadership Forum.

“Lytle is a dangerous goal-scoring threat and a player who competes and practices with great intensity,” said Purcell.  

Tempel, a 5-8 defender, is a native of Aiken, South Carolina where she plays for South Aiken High School. She also plays for the Aiken Fire Club team and head coach Justin Rhodes where she served as team captain in 2004. Off the field, Tempel is a member of the National Honor Society and the Beta Club. She also is a member of the South Carolina Olympic Development state team.

“ Missy is a player with a very mature attitude and work ethic,” said Purcell. “She has tremendous potential and will give our team a boost in athleticism defensively.

Howard, Robinson, Battye, Cannon, and Tempel become the first signees of the 2005 Blue Hose women’s soccer recruiting class. I am very excited about this class,” said Purcell. “Not only will they be a very successful group on the soccer field, but they are also all exceptional students. I know these five young ladies will make Presbyterian College proud both on and off the field.”

The Blue Hose are coming off an 8-7-2 overall campaign in 2004 where they finished fifth in the South Atlantic Conference regular season and were a semifinalist in the 2004 Food Lion/SAC Tournament.
