Joyce,
Blue Hose Upset No. 22 Catawba, 2-1, in SAC Women’s Soccer
Action
CLINTON, S.C. –
Senior
Claire Joyce (Aiken, S.C.) helped make Presbyterian College’s
Senior Night a memorable one as her goal with 2:50 left in the
regulation gave the Blue Hose a 2-1 upset win over No. 22
Catawba College Saturday night.
Joyce
brought the ball in from about 40 yards out and once inside the
penalty box, she let it rip to the far post upper corner for the
would be game-winner. That was Joyce’s 10th career game-winning
goal. After taking the 2-1 lead, the Blue Hose played solid,
stingy defense including sophomore Erin Sinkuler (Roswell, Ga.)
stopping a point blank shot by senior McKenzie Burman just 39
seconds after Presbyterian reclaimed its lead.
The Blue
Hose struck first as sophomore Lytle Cannon (Spartanburg, S.C.)
found the back of the net in the second minute after collecting
a misplaced Catawba goal kick.
Catawba knotted the game at 1-1 in the 38th minute as
senior Lauren Ebersole (Hagerstown, Md.) let a shot fly from
just outside the box that happened to hop over Sinkuler’s hands.
Presbyterian finished with a 17-10 advantage on shots, including
a 9-4 margin in the second half. The Indians held a 5-0 lead on
corner kicks with all five coming in the second stanza.
Sinkuler
finished the night with four stops, while freshman Chelsea
Binder (Woodstock, Md.) and junior Kathleen Blake (Greensboro,
N.C.) split equal time in goal and combined for five saves.
The Food
Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament commences on Tuesday,
October 21 at the site of the higher seed. The SAC claims three
of the Top 25 women’s soccer teams in Division II as well as six
of the nine teams in the NCAA Southeast Regional Poll.
The Blue
Hose will face Tusculum College as the second-seeded Pioneers
host the No. 7-seed Blue Hose on Tuesday in Greeneville, Tenn.
Tusculum is ranked fourth in the nation and tops in the
Southeast region.
