CLINTON, S.C. - No.
12 Tusculum College scored a pair of early goals and had
to hold off a second half rally to defeat Presbyterian
College 2-1 Saturday night at Pioneer Field in South
Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action. The
Pioneers (7-0-1, 2-0 SAC) record its fifth consecutive
win, while the Blue Hose fall to 3-4, 1-3 SAC.
The contest was a physical
one as the teams combined for 33 fouls and four
cautions.
Tusculum’s Kelly Barron got
the scoring started in the fifth minute when she stole
the ball in the box and blasted a shot to the right
corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead. It was Barron’s
sixth goal of the season. Becky Carreiro also
tallied her sixth scoring tally of the season as she
took a 50-yard lead pass by Ashley Moreira and beat PC
keeper Erin Sinkuler (Roswell, Ga.) to the right corner
for a 2-0 lead at the 9:12 mark.
Both teams would play to a
stalemate for the next 50 minutes until sophomore
Sheldon Robinson (Simpsonville, S.C.) blasted a shot
from 35 yards that hit the left post and bounced to
freshman Britney Horton (Columbia, S.C.) who knocked in
her first collegiate goal at the 62:42 mark.
Tusculum held off a furious
push by Presbyterian as Wardrop turned away three shots
on goal. Sinkular was also stellar as she held TC
at bay for the final 80 minutes as she accounted for
five saves.
Moreira’s assist was her
29th of her career, tying her for second place all-time
with Elaine Green (2000-03).
The Pioneers return to
action on Wednesday when they travel to Jefferson City
to face No. 3 Carson-Newman College in a SAC showdown.
Presbyterian will host Francis Marion University of
Sept. 27.
