Joyce Breaks Away For Golden Goal To Commandeer
PC Extra Time Win Over Wingate

CLINTON, S.C. – Claire Joyce netted her second goal of the evening in the latter minutes of the second overtime period to give the Blue Hose a 3-2 victory over Wingate before a crowd of 208 on Friday evening.

The score 2-2 for over 50 minutes, Joyce broke away from the Wingate defense in the 107th-minute and slid the soccer ball just under the hands of Wingate goalkeeper Kathryn Smith to garner PC’s fifth win of the 2006 campaign.

Joyce scored her first goal of the match in the 39th-minute when she used a Christy Howard pass to score on an open net, as Smith was caught out of position.

The score placed PC ahead by a margin of 2-1, but the lead would not stay. Jordan Mayer, who led the Bulldog attack in the loss with two goals, scored her second goal of the evening when she opportunistically took advantage of a loose ball in the 18-yard box of Presbyterian and beat PC goalkeeper Erin Sinkuler to the left corner.

Mayer first struck for the Bulldogs in the 20th-minute when she scored the first goal of her intercollegiate career to place Wingate on top at 1-0.

Ginny Wolfe made sure that the Blue Hose would not stay behind for long, netting her fourth of the season on a beautifully hit ball to the left corner past Smith, who had three saves for the Bulldogs on the evening.

In total, PC (15) shot the soccer ball five times more than Wingate (10). The Bulldogs had a proclivity for putting the ball on frame in the contest though, forcing Sinkuler to corral six saves.

Presbyterian improves to 5-7 and 2-3 in South Atlantic Conference action, while Wingate falls to 9-4 and 2-2 in league play.

The Blue Hose have a rare three days off before returning to the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 10 against the Lions of Mars Hill. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Mars Hill, N.C.
