SPRINGS, N.C. —
The Presbyterian College women’s tennis team picked up their
second win of the season over an NCAA Division I opponent
with Tuesday’s 5-2 road victory over Gardner-Webb
University. The Lady Blue Hose, ranked No. 25 in the nation
in Division II, improve to 2-0 on the season, while the
Bulldogs drop to 1-9 on the season.
Presbyterian picked up the doubles point with victories at
the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. Sophomore Brittany Lanford
(Florence, S.C.) and junior Lisa Moyer (Florence,
S.C.) of PC defeated Sara Zirnheld and Amy Beavers
8-4 at No. 2 doubles, while junior Lauren Brown
(Gaffney, S.C.) and sophomore Kari Fuller (Suwanee,
Ga.) defeated Tracy Tonsor and Jenny Gomez 8-6
at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Tonsor defeated PC sophomore Cassie Martin
(Gainesville, Ga.) 6-0, 6-3 to even the match at 1-1.
PC junior Catherine Bankhead (Amarillo, TX) won 6-3,
6-4 over Gomez at the No. 1 flight, while Brown defeated
Beavers 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 to give the Lady Blue Hose a
3-1advantage. Moyer increased PC’s lead to 4-1 with a 6-1,
7-5 victory over Monica Walser. The Bulldogs cut the
lead to 4-2 when Krystina Sigmon defeated Fuller 7-6
(4), 6-4 at No. 5 singles, but Landord defeated G-W’s
Zirnheld 7-6 (4), 7-5 to give PC the 5-2 victory.
Presbyterian returns to action on Saturday, March 4 when
they open South Atlantic Conference play by hosting Mars
Hill College at 1:30 pm.
