Presbyterian Wins 2007 Food Lion SAC Women's Tennis Tournament Title
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Top-seeded Presbyterian
College defeated No. 2 seed Newberry College 5-0 Saturday
afternoon in the championship match of the 2007 Food Lion
South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament. The
match was held at the Nichols Tennis Complex on the campus
of Tusculum College.
The Lady Blue Hose (14-5) capture its 14th SAC Tournament
title and third in a row. Newberry's magical run in the
tournament comes to an end as the Lady Indians (11-7) were
competing in their first SAC Tournament final.
PC was led by senior Catherine Bankhead (Amarillo, Texas),
as she was named the SAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Bankhead, a All-SAC First Team selection, went 3-0 in
doubles play during the tournament and recorded a singles
win earlier on Saturday against fourth-seeded Mars Hill.
The Lady Blue Hose swept three doubles matches, including an
8-4 pro set win by the No. 1 duo of Bankhead and Abby
Diminich against Newbery's top tandem of SAC Freshman of the
Year Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) and All-SAC selection
Lauren Hartley (Beamsville, Ontario, Canada).
Brittany Lanford (Florence, S.C.) recorded PC's fourth point
of the match with her straight set (6-0, 6-0) win over
Newberry's Bethany Poppe (Califon, N.J.) at No. 6 singles.
SAC Player of the Year Lauren Brown (Gaffney, S.C.) clinched
the winning point with her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mortimer at
the No. 1 flight.
