Martin, Moyer Advance to ITA Championship Matches

LAKELAND, Fla. – Senior Lisa Moyer (Florence, S.C.) and freshman Matthew Martin (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) will represent the Presbyterian College tennis programs in their respective championship matches after going 2-0 on the third day of competition at the 2006 Wilson ITA Southeast Regional Tournament.  The regional tournament, which is being hosted by Florida Southern College, will be wrapped up on Sunday.

Men’s
Finding himself in the championship match of the men’s singles back draw is Martin.  Martin is the only Blue Hose vying for an individual title at the regionals.  He first eliminated Barry’s Victor Rodriguez in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.  Martin then defeated his teammate, sophomore Adam Herendeen (Douglasville, Ga.), 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the finals.  He will face Florida Southern’s Nick Berning tomorrow.

Presbyterian has two doubles teams in the playing in tomorrow morning’s semifinal round of the doubles back draw.  Sophomore tandem Patrick Fediuk (Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada) and Herendeen will take on Florida Southern’s Greg Heartt and Justin LaFlamme on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.  Fediuk/Herendeen advanced to the semis after disposing of Carson-Newman’s Giuseppe Schwarz and Preston Sneed 8-6.

In addition, junior Zach Glankler (Highland Village, Texas) and sophomore Andrew Lee (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) made it beyond the quarterfinals with a default victory over Saint Leo’s Greg Strange and David Farinez.  Glankler/Lee hope to be in the championship match with a win over Florida Southern’s Berning and Isaac Galindo tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.

Women’s
Moyer continued to roll through the women’s singles back draw pairings, disposing of two more players to earn a spot in tomorrow’s championship match.  Moyer first defeated Florida Southern’s Erin Conroy 6-3, 6-2 before posting a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Tampa’s Erin Heeder.  She will square off against Rollins’ Anastasiya Shevchenko at 10 a.m. in the final.

Last year in dual meet action versus Rollins, Moyer handed Shevchenko a 6-1, 6-4 setback when Shevchenko was ranked No. 15 in the Southeast region at the time.

The duo of senior Lauren Brown (Gaffney, S.C.) and sophomore Abby Diminich (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) advanced to Sunday’s semifinals with an 8-3 victory over Nova Southeastern’s Mary Crider and Andrea Moncada.  Brown/Diminich look to claim the doubles back draw title by defeating Tampa’s Heeder and Jessica Faber in the semis tomorrow at 9 a.m. to earn a spot in the championship match.
