Brown Wins Consolation Bracket at Southern Intercollegiate Championships

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Senior Lauren Brown (Gaffney, S.C.) of the Presbyterian College women’s tennis team captured the consolation side of the B-2 Singles flight at the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of South Carolina this past weekend.

Brown finished the tournament 3-1, defeating a Division I player along the way.

In her opening match on Saturday, Brown fell to the Gamecocks’ Megan McGavock in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.  McGavock went on to win the B-2 Singles flight title.

Brown’s rebounded from her loss to McGavock in her next match, as her first victim was Appalachian State’s Frances Blanton.  She beat Blanton in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

Her next victory came over Brenau University’s Paula Ghilardotti.  Brown defeated Ghilardotti in straight sets as well with set scores of 6-1, 6-2.

Brown played a hard-fought match against Francis Marion’s Kamini Murugaboopathy to bring home the consolation singles title.  Murugaboopathy claimed the first set 7-6 before Brown took the second one with a decisive 6-1 margin.  Brown then won the tiebreaker set, 10-4. 

The Southern Intercollegiate Championships marks the conclusion of the fall season for the women’s tennis team.  The Blue Hose will kick-off their spring season on Feb. 10 when Presbyterian travels to Charleston, S.C. to face future Big South Conference opponent, Charleston Southern.
