First FCA Meeting Packs MSY

“Hell doesn’t have to exist for me to serve God!” roared speaker Tony Temple through the speakers of MSY during the first FCA meeting of the year on September 7. MSY was packed with students ready to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

The speaker was Greenwood High School football Coach Tony Temple, the youth pastor at Friendship Worship Center in Abbeville, South Carolina. Worship was lead by John Dukes, Worship Pastor at Capstone Church in Fountain Inn, South Carolina.

Flash Mob to Welcome Freshmen

Martin Pruitt moving in freshman during 2011 orientation

What happens when freshmen are done with Matriculation? PC hosts its very own flash mob, of course! Organized by Patrick Kennedy and Carolyne Elizabeth Brooks, the flash mob had great choreography and included the PC Choir, cheerleaders, football team, any upperclassman willing to dance, and even some administrators like Dr. Griffith. Dancing and chanting, “You don’t wanna go home!” hopefully sent the message to the freshmen that PC is a warm place, and that it is perfectly okay to break out into song.

Creative Writing Student Reading

April 19, 2011 Campus Community No Comments

The entire PC community is invited to My Friends Bookstore this Wednesday night, April 20, at 7:30 to hear students read selections from some of the stories that they have been working on this semester. The night will begin with a reading by Amanda Eason from her Creative Writing seminar project, and McKenzie Wells will follow with a reading from a story that she has completed as part of her independent study. The rest of the readings will come from the current students in the Creative Writing: Fiction class taught by Mr. Robert Stutts and assisted by Cameron Cook.
Each student in the fiction writing class has written three short stories that have been presented to and critiqued by the rest of the class. For this public reading, every student will read a short selection from one of their best stories. Many different types of writing styles can be expected, so there should be something for everyone to enjoy. … Continue Reading

Pc Meets Egypt: Riots and Revolts

Occasionally, history is not something that we study in a textbook, but rather something that we experience as it happens. Our generation has certainly seen our fair share of “history in the making.” However, a couple of months ago, as the people of Egypt gathered in all senses of the word to demand the fall of (then) President Hosni Mubarak’s regime, some of PC’s own students were in the middle of the revolution’s developments. Taylor Warner and Jessica Shamoon had just recently arrived in Cairo to begin their semester of study at American University in Cairo when the riots and revolts began.
Despite a stressful time of adjusting her travel plans and settling in her new place of study for the semester, Jessica was kind enough to respond to some of my questions about her time in Cairo through e-mail correspondence. … Continue Reading

All Fools’ Day — Welcome to April, PC

The Blue Stocking staffers covered PC campus with posters this year in celebration of April Fools’ Day. While not an actual holiday, April 1st serves as a day full of merriment and is often riddled with jokes and tricks. On this day only, most people are allotted a free pass to exert their inner goofiness and act completely foolish. This imitation holiday found its origins in a book that many of you have probably been forced to read in your time here at PC.

It’s in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales that we find the roots of this famed day. In the Nun’s Priest’s Tale, Chaucer writes the phrase “Syn March began thirty days and two” which was incorrectly translated to mean the thirty-second day of March rather than it’s intended meaning of thirty-two days after March. This put the day in question to be the 32nd of March, or April 1st. The story is about a vain rooster who is tricked when a sly fox flatters him. Luckily the rooster is able to escape death, and he comes to realize that he was foolish to trust a flatterer. Ever since, there have been countless literary and media hoaxes conducted on this day. Acts of foolishness are generally accepted and are executed around the world.

The 1st of April has long been a day of tomfoolery, mischief, nonsense and antics so smile PC, and embrace your inner fool :)

First Open-Mic Night Draws Readers and Audience

March 30, 2011 Campus Community No Comments

The first semesterly Open-Mic night was held last Thursday March 24th at 7:30 PM in the third floor of My Friend’s Bookstore. Cameron Cook organized and emceed the event, which allowed all students (including non-English majors) to read their own creative writing in front of an audience. About two dozen students and faculty attended the readings, but only a handful shared their original creative writing with the audience.
Zach Sprouse opened up the event with a monologue from the 2005 comedy, Wedding Crashers. David Nguyen followed with an excerpt from his original erotic short story entitled “The Happy Typists.” … Continue Reading

A Book About Death

Recently in PC’s own Harper Gallery there was an international exhibit put on display entitled A Book About Death. The project was created originally by American artist Ray Johnson; however, the new version featured in the gallery is the work of artist Matthew Rose. A Book About Death is nearly 500 pages of original pieces done by artist across the world. One of the most intriguing factors about this piece is that it allows for new submissions to be added on as it goes to different art exhibits. Also, this unique masterpiece features the Wailing Wall in which we celebrate the lives of those we have lost. … Continue Reading
