Dressing for an interview

Appropriate attire is a must! The clothing you wear to your interview should make you look like you will fit in at your prospective employer. When in doubt, err on the side of conservatism. Even if the company has a "business casual" dress policy, you're better off dressing a bit on the stuffy side than in taking a gamble only to find that your idea of casual doesn't match that of your prospective employer.

Women

Suit or tailored dress in solid or subtle color - no extreme slits.
Polished and closed toes shoes, basic dark pumps with medium or low heels; no run-down heels.
Always wear hosiery and keep color neutral.
Nails subtle if polished, clean and not chipped.
Make-up should be minimal- not distracting.
Clutch or small shoulder bag; choose between an attache' case or handbag (not both).
Simple and basic jewelry - nothing dangling!
No cologne or perfume.

Men

Navy, charcoal or other dark suit.
Solid white or light shirt (make sure it's ironed) and conservative tie.
Shined shoes with no run-over heels. Tassel loafers, wingtips or lace-up shoes preferred. Over-the-calf socks. No tennis shoes or sandals!
Clean nails.
Neat conservative hair cut. (No spikes,pony-tails, braids, or dreadlocks)
Facial hair is a risk.If worn, make sure it is neatly trimmed!
Avoid flashy cufflinks, rings or neckchains. No earrings!!
No coogne.

Everyone

No smoking or chewing gum. If you are a smoker, remember that smoke remains in your clothing, so dry-clean suits often.
If you are wearing a new suit or outfit, make sure all tags are removed!
One ring per hand.
Quality pen and notebook or portfolio.
Don't forget to flash that million dollar smile!

Remember

An interview isn't a beauty contest, but how you dress and your overall appearance almost always gets noticed by the interviewer. Don't give the interviewer a chance to rule you out because you didn't feel like ironing a shirt or polishing your shoes! Dress in a business-like, professional manner, and you'll be sure to fit in wherever you interview.
