| Presbyterian College strives to develop in students the ability to think clearly and independently, to make critical judgments, and to communicate effectively in both speech and writing. The role that internships play in preparing students for the world after college is integral to this goal, so much so that each student is required to complete either an internship or intercultural experience prior to graduation. With that goal in mind, we encourage you to become an active participant in the internship program. By participating in an internship, students gain skills in communication, problem-solving, and team work. They develop their work ethic and a sense of initiative in an employment setting. The internship also allows the student to explore career ideas, gain experience, and learn how their academic choices relate to employment. The internship program can be extremely beneficial for your company or organization. Internships are an economical way to recruit potential employees, and this hands-on learning experience provides training for future employees. Current students also can bring in new ideas, skills, and enthusiasm for getting the job done.
- Submit an Employer Request for an Intern to the Director of Career Services and Internships
- The intern’s responsibilities should support the business or organization objectives and limit clerical work to no more than 20 percent of total responsibilities
- The employer will meet with the intern at the beginning of the internship to provide an orientation and to explain the responsibilities and expectations
- A professional staff member, as the intern’s supervisor, provides ongoing guidance and direction
- Interaction with the intern’s campus advisor is encouraged and a formal evaluation will be requested by the Director of Career Services and Internships at the end of the semester
- The college requires the intern to be a junior or senior. Sophomores will be considered based on their preparedness for an internship.
- The intern is expected to abide by the business or organization’s policies and procedures regarding conduct, dress, and protocol.
- An overall GPA of 2.0 is the college requirement for an internship. However, we recognize that the employer may require a higher GPA, which would then be the base for that position.
- Interns are required to maintain a weekly journal, meet with the campus intern advisor on a regular basis, attend on-campus internship class or seminar, and complete a final paper, project, or presentation about the internship experience.
How to get started To ensure that having an intern in your business or organization will be productive, the Director of Career Services and Internships will review the requests and needs so that the placement is mutually beneficial. Having an established internship program is not necessary to be a partner with the college. We will work with you to review objectives and create a position that provides a meaningful experience for both the intern and the employer. Please contact the Director of Career Services and Internships to review ideas and suggestions for internship programs. At the beginning of the student’s college experience, they know that they can do and be anything they want. We anticipate that at the completion of an internship, the students will acknowledge that “the internship experience helped me find that ‘anything.’” If you would like to submit a proposed internship, you may use our Employer Internship Request Form, which may be printed and returned by email or fax (864)833-8516 We look forward to hearing from you!
