An internship abroad: PC student interns in Honduras

Kathryn Anne Mooneyham, Biology and Spanish Major, Class of 2009
Medical Trip to Honduras
Tegucigalpa, Honduras with a team of doctors from private practices in South Carolina and the Greenwood Genetics Center

I had the opportunity to go to Honduras for a week with a group of doctors on a medical missions trip. I got to help check the patients in as they arrived to the clinics, and I served as the "ophthalmologist" during the week.  I gave the patients reading glasses if the doctors decided they needed them.  I also had the opportunity to talk with the patients and to play with the children.

I was very nervous before leaving for Honduras because I did not really know anyone very well that I was going with.  I did not know what to expect, or what I would be doing when I got there.  I knew that I would not be able to speak with my family for a week, which made me anxious.

On the surface, I gained confidence in my Spanish conversation skills.  I was able to speak with the patients.  They were so patient.  I also got to watch the doctors interact with the people in the clinic.  I realized how interesting pediatrics is to me and have decided that I want to go to medical school.  On top of teaching me these things, the trip really taught me how to trust in God.  Throughout the week, I got to witness so many people being saved.  The doctors helped the patients with their physical needs and then would help them spiritually.  I saw a marvelous love for God in the people of Honduras, and because of this internship opportunity, I will be changed forever!
