What happens if I am documented for violating the Code of Conduct or other Student Life policies and regulations?
The Department of Student Life receives incident reports from resident assistants, campus police officers, faculty, staff, and other members of the campus community. Each week the chief hearing officers meet to review the incident reports received for the week. During these weekly meetings, the Dean of Student Life assigns the incidents to the various hearing officers, depending on the type of violation (i.e. Code of Conduct, Residence Life Community Living Policies, Student Organization Policies, or Student Life Regulations and Policies). If the incident involves a possible Honor Code violation, the incident is referred to the Honor Council by the Vice President for Student Life. For additional information about the judicial process, refer to The Knapsack.
Will I be contacted if I am documented for violating the Code of Conduct? If so, how long will it take before I am notified?
In most cases, students will be contacted by the hearing officer that has been assigned to the case within a week after receiving an incident report. Hearing officers may contact students by phone, email, and/or letter in an attempt to schedule an administrative hearing. Students are expected to respond as soon as possible to avoid additional sanctions.
Will my parents be notified if I violate the Code of Conduct or other Student Life policies and regulations?
Parents are automatically notified any time a student gets more than one alcohol violation. If a student’s health is in jeopardy, parents may be notified on a first alcohol violation. Parents are also notified of drug violations and any other violations that could potentially involve suspension.
Where do I pay my judicial fines?
All judicial fines are collected in the Office of Residence Life by Mrs. Deloria Burriss (or designee). The Office of Residence Life is located on the second floor of the Douglas House. All checks should be made payable to Presbyterian College.
What is an administrative hearing?
Students who are not required to go before the Student Life Judicial Board (SLJB) are generally required to meet with a staff member in Student Life, who is referred to as a Hearing Officer. The hearing officer will meet with the student to review the details of the incident and to give the student an opportunity to share her/his side of the situation. From there, the hearing officer will make a determination as to whether she/he thinks the student has violated the Code of Conduct (or other Student Life policies and regulations). If she/he finds that the students is responsible for committing a violation, the hearing officer will then issue sanctions to the student. This entire process is referred to as an administrative hearing.
Who are the Student life hearing officers?
Student Life hearing officers include the Dean of Student Life, the Director of Residence Life and Summer Programs, the Director of Student Activities and Greek Life, the Springs Coordinator, the Area Coordinator/Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs, the Area Coordinator/Coordinator of Greek Life, and the Director of International Programs (for minor incidents that take place in CIH). In certain instances, the Vice President for Student Life may also serve as a hearing officer.
What is AlcoholEdu?
AlcoholEdu, a program provided by Outside the Classroom, is an online prevention program that we require students who violate the alcohol policies to complete. This course is designed to challenge students to make better – “healthier and safer” – decisions about alcohol. This course requests certain information about students’ alcohol choices so that it can tailor the course to the individual. The course is composed of a serious of chapters. Students may complete all the chapters at one sitting or they may complete individual chapters at different times. It takes approximately 4-5 hours to complete the entire course. At the end of the course, students are tested on the information and must make a 70 or higher to complete the sanction. Hearing officers provide logon information to students during the administrative hearing when sanctions are assigned.
