How to Implement Effective Programming

Purpose of Programming

* To provide students with structured and unstructured activities and events that promote academic, social, emotional and personal development within the campus community

Ten Goals of Programming

* Always keep in mind your aduience
* Listen to all ideas
* Strive for creativity
* Define the purpose
* Involve as many people as possible
* Be aware of possible resources
* Reach a wide variety of groups with each program
* Motivate people to attend your program
* Keep the program consistent with the goal
* Evaluate your efforts and results

Programming How To's

Needs Assessment - The process of finding out what programs are wanted, needed, or useful

* Listen to people around you
* Survey
* Suggestion Box
* Program to address problems

Idea Formulation - Pulling together everyone's thoughts on exactly what program would fit the needs expressed

* Brainstorming - be aware of time, money, supplies involved and scheduling conflicts

Planning the Program - Figure out what needs to be done and hwo is going to do it.

* Use the person that gave you the idea to help implement.
* Pick a date that does not conflict with other popular campus events.
* Check all arrangements the day prior
* Arrive at the program early to greet guests and check facilities
* Publicly thank special guests and those that attended
* Clean up
* Evaluate the program

Publicity

* Who, What, When, Where, Why, How Much
* Large programs at least 3 weeks in advance
* Smaller programs 2-5 days in advance
* Remove publicity after an event
* Get started early
* Keep it simple
* Use a logo or theme
* BE CREATIVE!!!
* Proofread

Types of Publicity

* Handmade posters
* Printed Posters
* Balloons
* Table tents
* Flyers
* Banners
* Buttons
* Sidewalk Chalk

Where to Post Publicity

* Snack machines
* Bathroom doors/stalls
* By elevators/stairs
* Display cases
* Under doors
* Front of buildings

Motivation

* Students shoudl have genuine desire to attend or particpate in the program
* Be enthusiastic
* Reward help/participation
* Get residents involved
* Have great publicity

Program Implementation

* Prepare the set up early
* Check equipment early
* Be prepared for introductions of the program or guests
* Be ready to "go with the flow." Things happen; be flexible.

Evaluation

* Encourage feedback from participants.
* Learn from each program you do.
* Use evaluations forms.
* Complete a formal evaluation for your supervisor.
* Invite professional staff members to your program and get their feedback.

Why Programs Don't Succeed

* Poor planning
* Poor publicity
* Poor location

Mission

In support of the missions of the Department of Student Life and Presbyterian College, the DSL Paraprofessional Institute is designed to provide paraprofessionals --students employed by the College to serve as Bluefish, Resident Assistants, Multicultural Student Orientation Assistants, SGA Executive Officers, Springs' Managers, and SVS Interns -- with comprehensive training to prepare them for their roles and responsibilities; to provide them with opportunities to network with other paraprofessionals, faculty, staff, and students; and to provide them with opportunities to reflect on how their service as paraprofessionals enhances what they learn in the classroom, regardless of their majors or intended fields of endeavor.
