Orientation 2008
Computer Recommendations for Students

ResNet staff will be available during New Student Orientation Check-In for help connecting your computer to the college network.

While PC doesn't require students to have computers, most students do choose to bring one to campus. The following specifications are appropriate for both desktop and laptop computers:

Processor:
1 Ghz or higher for Windows computers, or Macintosh G4, G5, or Intel based processor.

Memory:
1 GB or higher preferred

Hard drive:
40 GB or higher is preferred

Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista or Macintosh OS X

Network Adapter:
A preinstalled (or built-in) and tested Ethernet card (10/100 BaseT)

Anti-virus Software: Any computer that is to be connected to the campus network MUST have current anti-virus software on it. Be certain that you purchase the full program, not just a 30-day trial version, and that you keep it updated.

Microsoft Office: Office 2003 (If you have not installed the Office 2007 compatability pack it can be found here)or 2007 Student/Teacher Edition is recommended, but Office 2004 or 2008 for Mac will work.

Printer: Ink jet or personal laser printer if you wish; laser printers are available in the computer labs.

Personal UPS:
An uninterruptible power supply can help protect your computer from possible damage from power flickers or outages. Consider an APC Backup 350 or 500 UPS.

Wireless:
There is increasing wireless (Wi-Fi) coverage on campus. To take advantage of wireless access, you will need an 802.11b network card (built-in or added to an external slot). Centrino Mobile Technology is recommended on notebook computers for wireless capability but not required.

NOTE: Personal wireless Access Points (A.P.s) and routers are strictly prohibited throughout the campus.

After you have set up your computer in your dorm, Residential Computer Consultants (RCCs) from ResNet will be able to assist you in connecting to the college network. Make sure you have the network card preinstalled and tested, and you should bring all disks or CDs that came with it in case any drivers need to be reinstalled. RCCs will be available in the dorms to assist you on the first day of Orientation 2006. We will provide the necessary cables to make the connection.
