Intern Learns "Golden Rule" of Using an Opportunity

Jess Parris, Class of '09

Internship Location: Michelin North American Headquarters; Greenville, SC

During my internship I headed up a project to develop a new process for updating resources with accurate information to achieve correct call transfer, to document and map this process, and to update FSMU (their mainframe) with the correct account assignments and present it to Michelin Management.

The computer, communications, and people skills I have learned this summer will give me an edge at any future job I may have.  Very few students get the chance to learn and work with the management of one of the top companies in the world, and I really appreciate what an opportunity it has been to work for Michelin.I think that adding these skills to my resume, along with Michelin’s reputation for excellence will reflect positively to any future employer or graduate school.

I have learned so much this summer. In addition to the work experience andjob skills I have gained, my manager Cindy Rhodes taught me so much about the corporate world. She is the personification of where hard work, skill, and the eagerness to learn while leading can get you by having worked her way up the corporate ladder.  She also set up meetings for me with various department managers so that I could learn about Michelin from all sides of the business and how they work together to form the elite corporation that Michelin is today.  I think that the most important thing that I will take away from this experience is to take advantage of every opportunity you are presented with.  See every assignment as a chance to learn, grow, and make something happen. A theory about going above and beyond I picked up while meeting with Jaye Young, a Communications manager with Michelin, is that so many people just drop the ball when they are given an opportunity, but you can’t just catch it either.  To be great, you have to catch it and turn it to gold.
