Presbyterian College Youth Day – Saturday, November 15, 2008

More than 450 high school and middle school-aged youths attended PC’s annual Church Youth Day on Saturday, November 15. The young church members from presbyteries across South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida came to Clinton for a day that included the announcement of 41 nominees and one winner of the Presbyterian College Outstanding Church Youth Leader award.

“Each of these Outstanding Church Youth Leaders,” said Dr. Jim Simpson, Church Relations Director, “already offers significant leadership, passion, and service to others in and through their churches and communities. As such, they are already expressing the motto of PC, ‘While we live, We serve.’”

Elizabeth Eason from Summerville Presbyterian Church in Summerville, SC was named the overall winner of the award. A captain of her church’s basketball and Relay for Life teams, Eason participates in Montreat Youth Conferences and in Project Burning Bush at Union-PSCE in Richmond, Va. Eason will receive an annual scholarship of $2500 upon enrolling at PC.

The nominees have been involved in a wide range of programs and activities that demonstrate their leadership, including Girls Against Bullying, Pastor Nominating Committees, Presbytery Youth Council, Montreat Conference Planning Team, Souperbowl of Caring, and Students Against Destructive Decisions.

All nominees receive a $500 annual scholarship upon enrolling at PC. Their names are listed below. The winner and nominees were honored on the football field during halftime of the PC-Coastal Carolina game.

Church Youth Day began in the Templeton Center, the home of Blue Hose athletics. PC students provided music and worship during the Worship in the Gym celebration. Alum Neeley Rentz shared an inspirational message about what it means to “Take it on!” in the Christian faith.

After Worship in the Gym, the youths participated in “The Amazing Race,” looking for clues in a scavenger hunt that took them across campus. The winning team was invited to help fire than cannon to help welcome the Blue Hose onto the field before the game.

“Youth Day 2008 was a celebration of which the College and our churches can be proud,” Simpson said. “By pulling together resources from across the college, a significant new group of youth and parents and youth leaders were touched by what PC has to offer.”
