Computer Science
A Closer Look: Computer Science at PC
At most schools, the typical entry-level computer science courses have a truckload of students. You really are thrown into the deep end to see if you can swim and the lifeguards are mostly interested in getting papers published, not in rescuing. At PC, our entry-level courses are typically 15-20 students. Those who choose to continue with the major will usually find class sizes in the range of 4-10. The professors are accessible in the classroom and available outside the classroom.
Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to learn how to solve problems using the languages computers understand, e.g. Java, C++, Python, and C#. Each major should be proficient in at least two languages. We will use Unix, Windows and Mac systems through the curriculum.
As for the graded work, many are individual assignments, but sometimes you will work with a group. The capstone course, Software Development, is a two-semester nine-month team project. In other courses, you may program robots (partially funded by Microsoft) or learn web development (using open source software) or create 3D models and animation (using Maya software).
