◊
Since the English Department launched the Writing Center in 1997, I have been fortunate to be the coordinator. The Writing Center, now under Academic Affairs, works one-on-one with students on papers from any class at any point in the writing process. Large numbers of students studying English discuss and revise their writing with student tutors and me. They brainstorm, develop their ideas, organize the paper, learn to recognize and correct errors in grammar and punctuation, and integrate and cite sources.
We average 2,000 conferences each year with 80% of freshmen and 45% of the student body. Students make appointments online on the Writing Center website, and the website has student resources on writing, including faculty guides.
On average fourteen students recommended by faculty members tutor in the center, many of them English majors. They enroll in the Writing Tutor Practicum course to learn the writing center theory and practice.
I have enjoyed the Writing Center field and have presented papers, workshops, and posters at the Southeastern and International Writing Centers Association Conferences with students as co-presenters when possible. Topics of research arise from concerns in our center such as perceptions of flow by students and faculty and working with students on papers with teacher comments. The real joy in my writing center work is meeting many wonderful PC students, reading interesting papers from many disciplines, and tutoring alongside the talented writers and friendly students who tutor in the Writing Center.
